Sr. Packaging Engineer, R&D
Location: Germantown, WI

Position Overview

The Senior Packaging Engineer in the Research & Development team is responsible for designing, developing, and testing packaging solutions across a diverse range of food and beverage products. This enterprise-level role oversees packaging innovation and implementation across multiple production sites, ensuring solutions are functional, cost-effective, and aligned with strategic business objectives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with suppliers to source materials for packaging development.

  • Monitor and integrate current packaging trends and technologies.

  • Develop prototypes and conduct performance and durability testing of packaging solutions.

  • Document the full packaging design process for future reference and continuous improvement.

  • Investigate material quality issues, identify root causes, and work with vendors on corrective actions.

  • Ensure packaging compliance with all applicable regulatory and industry standards.

  • Create and maintain internal specifications for packaging components.

  • Manage and verify dieline accuracy through structured artwork review processes.

  • Complete item setup forms accurately for both internal use and customer requirements.

  • Coordinate and execute packaging validation tests under various environmental and logistical conditions.

  • Support and manage relevant portions of the R&D budget.

  • Adhere to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and safety regulations.

  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and applicable regulatory guidelines.

  • Maintain product safety, legality, and quality standards in alignment with quality policies and Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) requirements.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.

  • At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in R&D within the food manufacturing industry.

  • Strong background in packaging materials, machinery, and production processes.

  • Experience in sensory science, salty snack products, or non-GMO projects is a plus.

  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities including team collaboration, accountability, and resilience.

  • Strong problem-solving abilities with a data-driven approach.

  • Effective communication and technical writing skills across various levels of the organization.

  • Proven ability to manage time-sensitive tasks independently or within a team.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and related productivity tools.

  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence cross-functional teams.

  • Comfortable working in dynamic, rapidly evolving environments with limited direction.

  • Ability to clearly interpret and communicate plans, ensuring timely execution.
